A Positron Emission Tomography – Computed Tomography (PET-CT) test is an advanced nuclear medicine imaging test that provides exquisite anatomic information of the organ function. This scan shows how your organs are working by measuring metabolic activity of the cells of body tissues. In a PET procedure, a tiny amount of a radioactive substance, called a radiopharmaceutical (radionuclide or radioactive tracer), is injected intravenuously to assist in the examination of the tissue under study. This is to evaluate the metabolism of the tissues.

How do you prepare for a PET scan?

For a PET scan test, patients can go home the same day. Always provide details of all the medications that you are taking, including vitamins and supplements, to your healthcare provider. In case an individual is pregnant, it is important to inform about it to the clinician. Also, do not take caffeine 24 hours prior to the test.

For the preparation of PET scan for cancer, detailed instructions will be provided. Always follow the doctor’s instructions to preparate for the scan. It is also recommended to wear comfortable clothing and leave metal accessories, such as jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures, at home. 

FDG – a radioactive sugar – which looks at sugar metabolism, is the most commonly used radioactive tracer for this scan. It is therefore important to avoid eating or drinking anything that has calories as it may affect the scan results.

Do not eat or drink anything six hours before the PET scan, except for plain, unflavored, non-carbonated water. You can also eat prescribed medicines that do not contain sugar and are not for diabetes. It is important to include foods high in protein just before the scan and drink plenty of water. It is also recommended to avoid carbohydrates and foods with sugar.
